Find Help, Find Hope

Faith Communities

ACFD18F

Faith communities are the first place many people in distress turn to for help. Clergy are often on the front lines of mental and emotional crises, but few feel well-prepared to respond effectively to troubled persons experiencing a psychiatric disturbance.  NAMI can help.  NAMI Howard County has much to offer with its wealth of referral, support and educational information for faith communities:

  • NAMI FaithNet, an information resource for NAMI members and leaders, clergy and congregations of all faith traditions.
  • In Our Own Voice, a presentation by two trained In Our Own Voice speakers who will share compelling and personal testimonies of living and overcoming the challenges posed by mental illness.  To schedule an In Our Own Voice presentation at your faith community, call us at (410) 772-9300.
  •  Mental Health Education and Resource Presentations tailored to your schedule and needs.
  • Program Information, including our schedule of Classes and Support Groups, and brochures about mental illness and related topics.
  • Support Groups scheduled several times each month for family members, parents of school-aged children, and individuals with an illness.
  • Educational Classes such as NAMI Family to Family, NAMI Peer to Peer, and NAMI Basics held at least twice a year.
  • Sunday Suppers , a monthly social event that provides a safe, social environment with a healthy meal for persons in Howard County living with a mental illness. The supper is free for the attendees and free transportation to and from the suppers is available.  Food is provided by volunteers including: families, churches, and organizations.

How You Can Help…

  1. Partner with us by referring NAMI HC  to all those in your congregation who are affected by mental illness.  We’d like to provide free education, supportive peers and needed encouragement to families and individuals who otherwise feel isolated, helpless and without hope.
  2. Schedule an In Our Own Voice or other presentation at your faith community.
  3. Sponsor a Sunday Supper by providing a healthy meal for at least 60 individuals
  4. Pray for those with mental illness and their families in your intercessory prayers (sample prayers link is available at the bottom of the page).

With Special Thanks…
